On the 24th of September, Living Water Project Officer Eilidh Spence will take part in the Tour de Ben Nevis, circumnavigating the base of the largest mountain in the UK. This cycle is labelled the ultimate mountain bike challenge for people with a sense of adventure, and we’re all rooting for her.
“When the cycle was first mentioned to me, I thought it would be a great opportunity to complete an exciting course and to raise funds for Froglife along the way,” explains Eilidh. “However, I have realised that there are plenty of challenges – it’s a 72km cycle along mountain bike trails with a variety of ‘fun’ elements including technical downhill stretches and carrying your bike across a river!”

“It’s going to be a long day! I’m sure it will be fun and a good way to help raise awareness of our reptiles and amphibians in Scotland,” adds Eilidh, looking on the bright side. “Since Froglife’s first Scottish project in 2009, there has been a huge demand for further conservation work. Several new Toads on Roads sites have been identified, enquiries to the Glasgow office increases every year, and we have loads of requests from schools to complete environmental education sessions with pupils.”
Froglife Scotland is currently working on the Glasgow and North Lanarkshire Living Water projects, creating and restoring ponds. Eilidh is also working on project development within Scotland to reach out to new habitats and audiences.
